Some early (pre-World War II) US air force heraldry, from the days when the air force was still a corps within the army :
The 1st Pursuit Group, the bars representing the original squadrons and the crosses their five campaigns in World War I;
The 7th Bombardment Group, also with Germanic crosses to represent battle honours; the bend was taken from the arms of Lorraine;
The 16th Pursuit Group, the four lightning flashes representing the four assigned squadrons.
These images, and more, can be found in the booklet Air Force Heritage published by the USAF in 1994.

In a booklet on the Hathi Trust website : https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.31210024822270&view=1up&seq=1. This website has lots of heraldry books (many of which can also be found on Google Books or on archive.org).Mark Henderson wrote:Interesting. Where did you find them?
