Heraldry of the Guardia Civil

Postby Marcus Karlsson » 20 Apr 2016, 19:14

The Guardia Civil is the oldest Spanish police force and is mainly charged with policing the rural areas including ports and highways. Some pictures of the Heraldry of the Guardia Civil by Heralder on Wikimedia Commons.

The lozenge inescutcheon of the Cavalry Squadron is highly unusual, though there are several instances of lozenges used in civic heraldry in Aragon.

Dear Chris,

The lozenge is unusual as an 'inescutcheon'.

However, as a charge which has been further charged, I think it works a lot better than a shield.

Regards,

We Anglo-Saxons have to get over the idea that a lozenge is solely the female version of a shield. Spanish practice was/is not the same.

In this Case I would assume that the lozenge alludes to the lozenge shaped collar patches of the uniform of the squadrons' members (and other Guardia Civil members). This form is not used anymore.
