Organizational Armorial

Postby rkasparek » 22 May 2014, 22:50

We have a design that needs to be blazoned, and I humbly seek your assistance.

The design is as follows:
Image

Hopefully you can make out the image. It is a dove in the crest with wings displayed.

My poor attempt might be something like
The shield: per chevron azure and or, a chalice argent, crowned at the honor point with a mullet argent of 12 points.
The crest would be something like: a dove proper with wings displayed

Any assistance would be appreciated!

Rick,

Your design has a metal on metal issue, you can get around it by blazoning the chalice as "proper", but in my opinion it would be better to swap the field tinctures and blazon as "Per chevron Or and Azure, in Base a chalice Argent and in middle chief point a mullet of 12 of the last". The crest appears to be: "a dove displayed Argent".

Terry... appreciate your comments, and I goofed I guess when I did metal on metal, but the argent chevron looks like it is 'shining light on our endeavors' so to speak - so I may go with 'proper'.

so Per chevron Azure and Or, in base a chalice proper and in middle chief point a mullet of 12 argent?
Or alternatively

what would this be, maybe 'Per chevron Azure and Gules a Chevron Or, in base a chalice argent and in middle chief point a mullet of 12 of the last'?

Rick,

Can't see a need for the gules unless you have a crying need for it. If you put the silver chalice on the gold background and backup your view to any distance, chances are it will blend into the background, you try something like fimbricating the chalice in sable. But I strongly suggest either the field color flip or the gold chevron as in your alternate.

By the way, if I might ask, what software do you use for your illustrations? I am looking to try more of the digital options, I am used to doing mine by hand and should look into a more modern approach, at least for rough first draft designs.

Terry... we're looking at it on this end. I agree - it sort of melts away. Its either the gules background or maybe the azure set the chalice off.
I am using and old poor copy of corel draw with a package from armorial gold that has the basics. Its okay for a start.

Very good. I've had reasonable luck with using it but have had wonderful support from those folks.

SO... would:

Arms: Per chevron Azure and Gules a Chevron Or, in base a chalice argent and in middle chief point a mullet of 12 of the last.
Crest: A dove displayed Argent.

be heraldically correct?

Yes - except that the latest illustration shows what - to me - is a chevronel. A chevron, as an ordinary, should be broad enough to bear charges. This one isn't.

It could also be argued that the mullet should be mentioned before the chalice as it is placed higher.

Thanks for the comments... so
Arms: Per chevron Azure and Gules a Chevronel Or, in middle chief point a mullet of 12 argent, in base a chalice of the last.
Crest: A dove displayed Argent.

Would that be more correct?

To me, yes. Others may have different opinions.
