Danish armorials online

Postby Arthur Radburn » 19 Mar 2017, 14:56

The Danish Royal Family website now contains digitised versions of the armorials of the Order of the Elephant and the Order of the Dannebrog. The former contains mostly royal and presidential arms from various countries, while the latter covers a broader field.

Here, by way of examples of the artwork, are the arms of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg

and his consort, Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte,

who were admitted to the Order of the Elephant in 1976. The Grand Duchess's arms are interesting in that while her paternal (Belgian) arms on the sinister are complete, the Grand Duke's on the dexter are not. In effect, his arms have been dimidiated and hers have been impaled. I suppose it made more artistic sense to do it that way, rather than to squash all four quarters of his arms into half a lozenge, which would have distorted them badly.
