Princess Leonore of Sweden

Postby Chris Green » 26 Feb 2014, 15:23

The newly born daughter of Princess Madeleine and Mr Christopher O'Neill has been named Princess Leonore Lilian Maria and is to be Duchess of Gotland. There are no official images of the Duchess's CoA as yet, but, based on precedent, she will bear the royal arms with those of Gotland in Q3. Her mother, who is Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, bears the arms of those two counties per pale.

The Gotland county CoA is Azure a Paschal Lamb proper, not to be confused with the Gotland commune CoA which is Gules a Paschal Lamb proper.

Thank you for posting this Chris. It is good to see that Sweden does not follow the British model and allows the daughter of a Princess to have Royal recognition. Zara and Peter (the children of The Princess Royal) remain "common"; though I'm sure that I would enjoy their degree of commonality!

Well the Title of Duke of Gotland (HKH Princess Leonore is the firt Duchess) have not been that lucky, so I hope the Princess Leonore will be luckier. The latest one HKH Prince Oscar (1859-1953) lost the title and all other royal titels upon his marriage to a non-royal. 2 April 1892 he was by his Maternal Uncle Grand-Duke Adolf of Luxemburg created Comte de Wisborg (Wisborg beeing an ancient Castle outside the only City of Gotland Visby). Swedish premission to accept the title in Swedish form greve af Wisborg and Coat of Arms was given on 22 October 1892.

Althou not Conencted to Gotland the Princes Sigvard (1907-2002, Duke of Uppland), Carl Johan (1916-2012. Duke of Dalarna or Dalecarlia to English speakers) and Lennart (1909-2004. Duke of Småland) which lost their Royal titles upon marrying whithout consent of the King, was on 2 July 1951 also created Comtes de Wisborg of Grand-Duchess Charlotte of Luxemburg. They used the same arms as Oscar.

Princess Leonore, Duchess of Gotland, was christened today and granted the Order of the Seraphim. Her CoA was also announced, and is exactly as expected: the royal arms with the arms of her Duchy in Q3.
