Hot off the press : the new arms of Archbishop Stephen Brislin of Cape Town, unveiled yesterday in advance of his elevation to cardinal today. The pall "symbolises the Cross as the instrument of salvation", the BaSotho hat alludes to his roots in the Free State province, the star and anchor represent Cape Town. A great heraldic improvement over the device which he had used for the past seventeen years, first as Bishop of Kroonstad (2006-09) and then as Archbishop of Cape Town (2009- ).
