The Bishops of Chester

Postby Martin Goldstraw » 13 Jul 2012, 09:29

Forumeers may be interested in a page I made for the Cheshire heraldry web site some time ago (apologies for the standard of the images, they were done many years ago and whilst I am still learning digital techniques, these images were very much in the novice stage).

http://cheshire-heraldry.org.uk/bishops/

It is a sad observation that recent Bishops have not deemed it necessary to become armigerous and have therefore broken a long, centuries old, tradition.

The salary for the average Anglican Bishop is around £40,000. Possibly not a lot for such a management roll but certainly enough to set aside the required fee for a grant of arms ... a prudent Bishop (and aren't they all prudent?) could always save up like most of us have to do.

If money really is the issue, then perhaps the diocese's coffers could help?

I'll admit that I don't care much for John Pearson's arms (Bishop 1673-1686). The erminois chevron on an argent field is too metal-on-metal for me - pean would have been a better choice.

It would be interesting to know, how many bishops from 1939, to date are (or were) married and how many had children to whom they could pass their arms.

As no prohibition exists for anglican Clegry to marry, I guess that the lion share of the CoE Bishops have been married.
