I note that in the Netherlands the idea that the martlet (merlet) should be shown as lacking beak, feet and legs holds sway (Eijsden-Margraten). In England they are usually shown as with beak but with tufts instead of legs/feet. The Dutch version seems to be a cross between the English martlet and the French merlette, which, while lacking beak and legs/feet has a long neck and more closely resembles a duck.
