Is it certain that the center one is supposed to represent Vienna? The arms are those of Greece (Marseille is a blue cross on silver), and if Athens didn't have its own arms at the time these might have been used instead.

According to http://www.stadt-muenchen.net/geschicht ... wappen.php, from 1865 to 1936 and again from 1949 to 1957, the field of the Munich arms was gold. The original silver was restored in the latter year.

Thank you. That explains that apparent error. I am sure the sign painters and printers appreciated the City Fathers' indecision.

No another source also said that the arms were those of Vienna.

There obviously was a mix up and the swapped the paints on Madrid's bordure and Vienna's field. Opps!
