I saw this flag being carried by some reenactors at the town Labor Day parade, but I could not identify it:

I’d call it “Quarterly, 1st per saltire gules, azure, or, and vert; 2nd per saltire or, azure, gules, and vert; 3rd per saltire vert, gules, azure, and or; 4th per saltire azure, gules, vert, and or, a cross argent”.

I'd also call it a hot-mess, but I'd still like to identify it. Any thoughts?

A hot-mess - one of the best descriptions I have heard for a long time.

It is very likely the color (drapeau d'ordonnance) of a French infantry regiment of the ancien regime. These generally followed the pattern of a white cross between quarters of various colors, many of them of this kind of geometric pattern. See the pages linked from http://www.drapeaux.org/France/Ancien_R ... erie.htm#L for examples.

Specifically, the Régiment de Saintonge, which was part of Rochambeau's army in the American Revolution and participated in the Battle of Yorktown.
