British County Flag Day

Postby Arthur Radburn » 23 Jul 2019, 12:43

Some "flying heraldry" to mark British County Flag Day. Here are a few English county flags, with the emphasis on those derived from county council arms.

Hampshire 2019.gif

Hampshire's county flag was introduced only a few weeks ago. It is almost identical to the county council arms, the difference being that a Saxon crown is used instead of St Edward's crown.

Warwickshire 2016.gif

The flag of Warwickshire, which dates from 2016, displays the centuries-old "bear and ragged staff" device. The device also appears on the county council arms, with the addition of a chief bearing three red crosses crosslet.

Cheshire 2013.gif

The Cheshire county flag, adopted in 2013, is a banner of the arms of the former county council arms. As the county council no longer exists, there is apparently no problem with infringement.

Scotland also has county flags. This chart recently appeared on Lord Lyon's twitter feed, with the news that steps are being taken to design flags for the three counties which do not yet have them.

Scotland of course (as yet) is still a part of Britain and so is included in "British County Flag day ;-)
