Too bad. Much as I love coats of arms, the plain tricolor makes a better flag.

The original flag of Romania was the plain tricolor, the CoA being used only on royal and military flags. The latter were banned following the communist take-over in 1947. The flag of communist Romania included a communist "heraldic" emblem. This was symbolically torn out of many flags during the 1989 and people proudly flew the flag with a hole in the middle. It took a while for the new Romania to agree on a CoA and now 20 years later this is to be included in the national flag (to the intense delight of flag makers no doubt!).

The decision will incidentally end a long-running dispute with Chad, whose flag is virtually indistinguishable from Romania's.

Scarcely the only such case (cf. Monaco and Indonesia), and barring a dustup between the naval forces of Romania and land-locked Chad hardly one that could incur any serious inconvenience.

But putting the arms on the Romanian flag actually will make it harder to distinguish between it and the flag of neighboring Moldova at a distance or in light winds. These two flags are much more likely to be flown in close proximity than those of Romania and Chad.

The Chadians did take the issue to the UN less than a decade ago.
