Heraldic artist : Alan Woodrow

Postby Arthur Radburn » 26 Feb 2017, 14:15

Here's a small selection of the heraldic work of Alan Woodrow (c1900-78), a South African architect and heraldic designer/artist. He lived in the province of Natal, and most of his heraldic creations are to be found there.

The Order of the Knights of Da Gama, a fraternal order (similar to the Knights of Columbus in the USA). Woodrow founded the order and designed its arms, which were granted by the College of Arms in 1957.

The SA Institute of Civil Engineers (1963).

Kloof High School (1969).

The Rand Water Board (1970).

The following two arms look very much like his work too :

We seldom look at the work of individual heraldic designers and artists. Some are well known, others less so -- either way, perhaps we should look at them more often. If you know of an artist whose work you'd like to share with the forum -- or you'd like to show us your own heraldic art -- please do so. A collection of galleries would be a good addition to the forum.

Yes, very much so. Being an architect, he was a first-class draughtsman, and he had a distinctive style.

Not least, he knew how the torse and mantling should sit on the helm. Many otherwise extremely talented heraldic artists seem to think that the torse somehow floats above the helm like a halo.

Very nice collection. I like the differences in shading.
