Sad news. The former State Herald of South Africa, Dr Fred Brownell, died on Friday, aged 79. The Minister of Arts & Culture described him today as "a true South African hero whose name is etched in history".

Dr Brownell was Assistant State Herald from 1977 to 1982, and State Herald from 1982 to 2002. He was also involved with defence force heraldry, and was for many years the herald/genealogist of the South African priory of the Order of St John. At various times, he was chairman of the Heraldry Society of SA and of the SA Vexillological Association.

Dr Brownell was also an internationally respected vexillologist, and is probably best known as the designer of the South African national flag (in 1994). He published several books and many articles on heraldry and flags, and a doctoral dissertation on the creation of the South African flag, and presented papers at several international congresses.

An appropriate motto for a herald.
