Arms of the city of Sao Tomé granted during Portuguese rule. As beeing a provincial capital of S. Tomé e Principe the shield is ensigned by a Mural Crown Or with five Towers. "Ordinary" cities where granted the same Mural Crown but theirs beeing Argent. In general the pattern for mainland Portugal Civic Arms where followed with the Scroll bearing the Name of the Municipality. In a few instances a Motto could be found on this scroll instead of the Name. Such as the one in the Arms of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) "Descoberta e soberania portuguesa" (meaning someting like Portugues Discovery and Sovereignity).
