Interesting. I wonder what the charges on the chief are : light bulbs, or perhaps some ancient East African coins?

Probably cowrie shells, widely used as currency in Africa having been introduced from the Maldives.

An interesting suggestion. They would certainly be appropriate as charges -- much more original than bezants.

While the ribs on the shells suggested cowries to me (symbolic of money in many parts of the world), the outline certainly called light bulbs to mind. Perhaps the tiler had no idea what he was doing.
