Since the Fall of the Soviet Union there have been a resurgance of Heraldry in Russia (for correctness there was a small beginning of this during the last decades of the Soviet Union) and this have also affected the Armed Forces which have gained new Colours for its Units and also a new system of Heraldry have been created. In which every unit is to be bestowed its own Arms in three versions. A Large one with shield wreath and toped by an Russian Eagle with attributes approriate to the Unit, a Middle one with just the Shield and a small one with only the insignia whitout the Shield (this is also placed on the Unit's Colour).

Re: Heraldry of the Russian Armed Forces
Thanks for posting these, Marcus.
As usual, in military heraldry, it's very systematic. It looks as though the design rule is a round shield for an arm of service, a curvilinear shield for an HQ or department, an accolade shield for a military district, and a shield resembling an open book for a training unit.

Re: Heraldry of the Russian Armed Forces
Disagree! Our military heraldry, while not as single-mindedly OCD as the Russians, there is a generally coherent approach - formal arms for "regiments" (historical but nominal holdovers, curently separate battalions sharing their regimental arms but usually assigned to different Divisions); use of distinctive designs for each State as a shared crest for National Guard units from the same State; badges (not arms) for each Division; standard flag patterns for units with their own regimental arms (different flag colors for different types of regiments (infantry, artillery, armor, etc.) with the unit's arms on the breast of an eagle; etc.)

How are the badges of US divisions systematic?
