Although I note that Marcus blazoned the eagle as "close," which is not the way it appears on the standard (obviously). Is close correct?

Yes Jonathan, I'am a lucky owner of one copy of this eminent Book.

Looking through my copy of A.C. Fox-Davies' Complete Guide to Heraldry Inote that the Egale close has another position, so I have to correct myself there. The Eagle should perhaps better be blasoned as Displayed with wings inverted.
