Arms of the Presidents of Germany

Postby Jonathan Webster » 31 Dec 2012, 16:59

In a similar vein to posts regarding the Presidents of various nations; I was wondering whether anyone has any information as regards any of the Presidents of Germany? I know both Presidents von Hindenburg and Weiszacker were from noble families and would thus has been armigerous, but does anyone know what arms they bore and whether any of the other Presidens have borne arms?

Marshal Paul von Beneckendorff und Hindenburg bore quartered arms. There's an untinctured illustration at http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Von_Beneck ... Hindenburg .

Apparently, I & IV are Von Beneckendorff, and II & III are Von Hindenburg.

According to Ottfried Neubecker's Wie finde ich ein Familienwappen? (1956), the arms were granted on 2 January 1789.

On his Stallplate as Knight of the Swedish Order of the Seraphim President Gustav W. Heinemann (1899-1976) President of the Federal Republic (Bundespräsident) 1969-74, bore:

Or a Hat Sable to which a Feather Gules are attached by a Cocarde Argent, Gules and Sable, accompanioned by a Canton Gules charged with an Axe and a Olive? Branch in Saltire Or.
Crest a Eagle issuant Sable Beaked and langued Gules (I'am not quite sure if this Bird is an Eagle, but my guess is that its is)
No Motto. Mantling Sable doubbled Or.

Heinemann's successor Walter Scheel (born 1919, in Office 1974-79) hade the following Arms (also displayed on his Stallplate):
Per Pale Gules a Horse issuant from the line of partition Argent and Argent a Housemark Gules.
No Crest or Motto.

von Weizäcker whose Arms has already been discussed was President 1984-94.

Johannes Rau (1931-2006) President 1999-2004 displayed the following Arms on his Stallplate as Knight of the Danish Order of the Elephant:
Or an Eagle close Sable armed and languaged Gules all within a brodure Gules.
No Crest of Motto.
This is a variation of the State Arms of the Federal Republic of Germany.

To be specific, it is the standard of the Federal President in shield form.

I'm curious Marcus; do you have a copy of 'Kungliga Serafimerorden 1748-1998'?
