The International Association of Amateur Heralds

The Kingdom of Bavaria was divided into Provinces named Kriese (today Regierungsbezirke). In the Müncherner Kalender 1906 Coat of Arms of these was published. I here present these as reprinted in the Archiv für Stamm- und Wappenkunde 1907.


Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia). Dexter side Franken and sinister side - Nürnberg seat of the administration of the Kreise. It also symbolises the former Free Imperial Cities in the Area.


Niederbayern (Lower Bavaria). Dexter the Old Bavarian pattern, sinister the Panther sign of the acient Dukes of Niederbayern.


Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria), the Old Bavarian blue-white pattern and the Monk's head symbolising München (Munich) Capital of Bavaria and administrative seat of Oberbayern.

Oberfranken (Upper Franconia). Eagle - the Brandeburg Eagle was used in the enschuteon of the Margraves of Bayreuth and Kulmbach of the Hohenzollern lineage. The Lion is the Arms of the Diocese of Bamberg. In the base the Arms of the Duchy of Franken.


Oberpfalz (Upper Pfalz) uses the blue Lion of Veldenz which also features in the State Coat of Arms of Bavaria.

The upper part shows the Coat of Arms of Franken. The Banner the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg and the Wheel - Electorate-Archbishopric of Mainz to which Aschaffenburg belonged. Whitout the Crown these Coat of arms is today used by the Regierungsbezirk Unterfranken.

Of course the Pfalz region (sable, a lion rampant or, armed, langued and crowned gules) was known in English as the Rhenish Palatinate, and is today part of the Land Rheinland-Pfalz.
As part of the Kingdom of Bavaria it was an exclave, some distance from the rest of the kingdom. It nonetheless used the postage stamps of Bavaria until these were replaced by those of the German Reich.
In fact, the first stamps used throughout Germany were Bavarian stamps overprinted Deutsches Reich.
The Pfalz remained part of the Freistaat Bayern until 1945, when it fell into the French occupation zone.
The form Kreise is plural. The singular is Kreis.
