Help requested please. Unknown COA at Nat Trust

Postby Kenneth Jones » 01 Mar 2025, 21:14

Hi
My first ever post, and also first attempt at a blazon (apologies for the multiple errors and / or omission’s).
Seeking your help and also I have a question, please.

We went out to to the National Trust site - East Riddleston Hall, Keighley, Yorks, England, today. Whilst strolling thru the historic rooms, we came across a bed chamber with a 4 poster bed, in dark wood, with a head board heavily carved/engraved, bearing a COA directly cut into the wood. The staff knew nothing about it (and as the Nat Trust sometimes swap furniture around it may not originally come from that site at all anyway) so requesting your help in identifying it, please. Apologies for my poor attempt at the blazon. All colours / tinctures are unknown (…except for 1 very big guess - France ancient).

Azure, seme de lis, (France ancient); per chevron, a saltaire floretty; in chief, an open book, clasped and garnished, dexter page bearing the capital letters R and E in pale, and other wording, sinister page bearing capital letter J and other wording ( all unreadable squiggles except the capitals).
Not sure if the chief is sitting on a thin band - or if the carver is just using it to show the chief is a different field/ partition line. Crest: A lion couchant, under two quills in saltaire, the dexter, feather downwards, the sinister feather upwards.
Motto. FIDE ET FORTITUDE (faith and fortitude ?).
( I tried attaching 1 pic, but the file size is too big).
Welcome any feedback on who this COA belongs to / any suggestions, please, as I promised the volunteer in that chamber /room that if we could help - we’d share the info back with them.

The question: does the National Trust ever reach out to ask for your help to do this sort of thing (as in ID unknown heraldry) , given the deep knowledge and experience you all have ?
Many thanks everyone
Best wishes to you all.
Kind regards
Ken J

I've contacted the National Trust group that covers Yorkshire and requested the information you're seeking. Will let you know when I hear from them.

Mr. Jones,
This is the reply I received from the National Trust. It is unsatisfactory, IMO. The person assigned to respond to me isn't a herald, obviously.

The reply;
[size=150]Dear Scott,

Thank you for your enquiry into the coat of arms on the tester bed at East Riddlesden Hall. In our archive, we have the following notes on the coat of arms:

‘In the centre of the headboard is a coat-of-arms, with what appears to be the cross of St. Andrew, and above left and right are panels of the Fleur de Leys, topped by a Helmet with a helm of a lion with crossed feathers above. A Motto which reads Fide et Fortitudine, (by Faith and Fortitude), which is the motto of the Clan Farquharson.’

I hope this helps with your enquiry.

Best wishes,

Amy

Sorry I couldn't get you a better reply.
