Recently, I saw a cross with Trident endpoints whilst Googling the interwebs. Just curious, but has this been used as a heraldic charge?
Also, would it be acceptable for heraldic crosses to be oriented in saltire?

Re: Cross Trident
I would say, Yes. The saltire is a form of cross to begin with, and is known by some as St. Andrew's cross. What do you want it to represent?

Re: Cross Trident
The trident cross makes an attractive charge, suitable for an armiger with naval or maritime connections. I see no reason why it couldn't exist as a saltire too -- long-established heraldic crosses such as the cross crosslet and the cross flory, to name but two, have saltire counterparts.

Re: Cross Trident
Thanks for the response. I have a friend who enjoys sailing. He also happens to be of Scottish ancestry, but is thinking of assuming arms rather than attempting a grant through Lorn Lyon. Therefore, I was curious about using the cross trident in saltire as a possible charge

Re: Cross Trident
How would you blazon that?
I have searched for an actual use of such a cross, but only found some examples on a German heraldry wiki. That is it seems some Heraldic scholar thought up the cross, but no one has used it. There are of course crossed tridents, in heraldry, and most of those in saltire, so it would be best to blazon in it so it won't be confused with one of those.

Re: Cross Trident
New charges dreamed up by writers etc., can be very useful in designing new arms IF they are visually distinctive and recognizable. This particular example, either as a cross or a saltire, is IMO a winner! The trident forks (term??) are at least as distinct and recognizable as, say, the ends of a cross botonne vs. a cross crosslet, difficult to tell which in small scale or at a distance (at least to my septuagint eyes!).

Would you call it a cross Trindentee?

No. But conceivably "Tridentine".
