World Radio Day

Postby Arthur Radburn » 13 Feb 2018, 15:55

Today, 13 February, is World Radio Day. To mark the occasion, a few radio-related arms.

Guglielmo Marconi

British Broadcasting Corporation, granted by the College of Arms in 1927.

Lord Reith, who headed the BBC for many years.

Anyone know of other radio-related heraldry?

From the Canadian Heraldic Authority, some personal grants related to radio:

Diane Perry - http://reg.gg.ca/heraldry/pub-reg/proje ... &ShowAll=1

Image
"The discs and stripes also form the Morse Code letter “P” (● ▬ ▬ ●), Ms. Perry’s initial and a reference to her involvement in amateur radio."

Image
"The shape of the badge alludes to the European tradition of female armigers displaying their arms on a lozenge rather than a shield. It also suggests a vintage radio loop antenna, a reference to her involvement in amateur radio."

Harry Lewis - http://reg.gg.ca/heraldry/pub-reg/proje ... entID=8564

Image
"The white wavy stripes suggest the signal and carrier wave of a radio broadcast, a reference to His Honour’s career in broadcasting, and, more broadly, to communication, one of the pillars of His Honour’s term as Lieutenant Governor. The radio mast pays tribute to His Honour’s broadcasting career"

Ronald Rennie - http://reg.gg.ca/heraldry/pub-reg/proje ... entID=4393

Image
"The white represents the entire visible electromagnetic spectrum while the blue represents its most energetic part, reflecting the general and the particular together. This is an allusion to Mr. Rennie’s diverse areas of learning and his particular field of expertise. The divisions of the shield represent the conventional circuit symbol for an antenna. This alludes to Mr. Rennie’s involvement in electrical engineering and telecommunications. the lightning flash symbolizes radio communications."

Mark Macpherson - http://reg.gg.ca/heraldry/pub-reg/proje ... entID=1000

Image
"The chief is embattled to suggest Mr. Macpherson’s military background, and the two red lightning flashes reflect his interest in the field of communication, both in his career in electrical engineering and telecommunications, and in his involvement in amateur radio organizations."

Thank you, Vincent, these are very interesting. I particularly like the Diane Perry arms -- very subtle symbolism.

My favorite is Marconi, at least as rendered above - two lions screaming at each other, with the Fleur de lys signifying the connection by radio!
(Yeah, I know, ex post facto symbolism...but hey, too good to pass up!)

The more recent example are also an interesting virtual "occasional roll"
