Re: The Duchess of Cambridge
To judge from Google, this story about the child being "the Prince(ss) of Cambridge", as if the city is now a principality, is being spread by a host of newspapers besides the Telegraph. The Cambridge News carries it, at the same time contradicting itself by quoting the statement from Buckingham Palace which emphasises that the Christian name is to be inserted between 'Prince(ss)' and 'of Cambridge'.
Cue one of my favourite quotations (from Robert McCloskey) : "I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realise that what you heard is not what I meant."

It's a boy! No succession questions for the next 80+ years.

You think that the boy is not going to breed for 80 years? Not like any male in my experience!
But I agree about the succession question.

(a) it didn't matter all that much to him--after all, his grandfather was a Lutheran who only converted because Athens was worth a leitourgia; and
(b) public attitudes in England toward a non CofE royal consort were presumably somewhat less tolerant in 1947 than they are now.
Just a slight correction: George I of the Hellenes was a Lutheran up until his unfortunate assassination in 1913. His children (including the father of the Duke of Edinburgh) were raised Orthodox in accordance with the Greek constitution.

Regarding the new Royal baby, my stepdaughter would now owe me a fiver had my attitude towards gambling not changed in the past nine months.

Why would there have been any in any case?

The birth of a princess would certainly have given more impetus to the current passing of various succession legislation in the commonwealth realms, something wholly unnecessary for a first-born son, who cannot be displaced in the Line of Succession under either the old or new Act.

You will note that I have created a separate topic for Prince George. The thread for the Duchess should henceforth be used for her alone.
