I do not know what that charge is, but I did a research paper on Sir Lucan in undergrad for an Arthurian Legend class. I will say that in modern terms he is more akin to a chamberlain (being in charge of managing the royal household and organizing court functions) rather than a butler (simply in charge of a serving staff).

In the vast majority of the Arthurian armorials that I came across, Sir Lucan is attributed a red lynx, usually on a gold shield – not unlike the arms here attributed to Sir Owen. That’s one of the many reasons that I chose the crest that I did. :D

A butler was originally (and etymologically) in charge of the wine--Old French boteillier from boteille, a container for liquids, or bottle.

So I figured the charges were two bottle-openers combatant in fess between as many bottle caps in pale all argent, taking into account that in Cornwall the fellows were more likely to be drinking beer than wine.

Or Mead Joe ! I enjoyed seeing these again. My Uncle many years ago gave me a set when I was about 10 years old and they helped spark my love of heraldry along with the movie, 'The Black shield of Falworth' so more nonsense there too, I am afraid !

I'm not sure heraldry could become more nonsensical than Monty Python and the Holy Grail, especially the arms of Sir Robin, the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot. ;)

Gerald Brault's book Early blazon - Heraldic Terminology in the 12th and 13th Centuries with special reference to Arthurian Heraldry will be of interest to those fascinated by King Arthur and the Round Table.

Here is another Arthurian roll. I find the bottom right one (Hector de Maris?) interesting. What would you call the charge?

Is it perhaps meant to be an octopus? "de Maris" presumably means "of the sea".

Could be a badly drawn Estoile.
