10 The White Horse of Hanover

“The White Horse of Hanover” was introduced into the Royal Arms in 1714 when the crown of Great Britain passed to the Elector George of Hanover. This grandson of Elizabeth, sister of Charles I, became George I, King of Britain, France and Ireland. The shield shows the leopards of England and the lion of Scotland in the first quarter, the fleur-de-lis of France in the second and the Irish harp in the third quarter; the fourth quarter shows the arms of Hanover.”

Some of you may have been wondering why the thread was entitled "The Queen's Beasts" when the beasts in question originated with various Kings. The answer may be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Queen%27s_Beasts

When I was working in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office at the end of the 1980s I had a colleague who, like me, was interested in heraldry. He told me that he owned one of the Queen's Beasts from the coronation having found it languishing outside a London shop (like a "red indian" outside a tobacconists I suppose) and recognising it for what it was bought it from the shop-keeper for a few quid. If the Wiki article is correct then what he bought was a life-sized copy rather than an original.

Interesting, Some badges are not represented though, such as the Lancaster Rose and the Scottish thistle. I wonder why they choose to go with shields instead of those.

I think the clue is in the word "Beasts".

Yes, but the beasts are holding shields with badges one them. Such as the Tudor Rose

The beast and the shield/badge that it is holding match. Thus White Horse of Hanover goes with CoA of Hanoverian Kings, Unicorn with Scottish royal arms etc.

Would not the thistle also go with the unicorn?

Absolutely. But there was only one unicorn among the 10 (different) Queen's Beasts so they had to make a choice. The number of Queen's Beasts (and their size) was predicated on the space available to display them outside the temporary building adjacent to Westminster Abbey.
