In the Gulf (Persian Gulf, alternatively Arab Gulf) the use of red flags was recognised by Great Britain when it entered into treaty relations with a number of the emirates.
I am unsure of their origin further back, but I do know that Muhammad’s armies had armies that used red, white or black flags.
The treaty flags were red, and Zanzibar also had one. Until 1961 Kuwait used a red flag with white Arabic inscriptions. Bahrain and Qatar used red flags with a white hoist and a zigzag division; in the case of Qatar the use of dyes that turned brown or maroon produced a flag with a different appearance. Abu Dhabi has a red flag with a white rectangular canton. Ras al Khaima has a red flag with a white border, as does Sharjah. Until 1970 Oman (or Muscat, as it was formerly known) also had a plain red flag.
Regards,
Mike
