Found this with some Googling:

In case anyone is wondering why a College of Music should have a sword in its arms, the charge is most likely a nod to the same charge in the arms of the City of London.

If so it is a little odd since from its founding until after the Grant of Arms the LCM was in Great Marlborough Street, which is in Soho, i.e. outside the City of London. It would in fact have been in the boundaries of the London County Council, whose arms do not include the sword:

and of the City of Westminster, whose arms do not include the sword either:

It is I suppose possible that the LCM was founded with the help of funds from the City of London, which, as the centre of the British Empire's financial district, was not short of cash for worthy causes.

The LCM must have the Grant of Arms somewhere, possibly also the correspondence with the College of Arms discussing the blazon.
