Broken wheel charge

Postby Cameron Campbell » 13 Apr 2015, 21:23

Dear sirs,

Is anyone aware of families that used a broken wheel charge in their achievement? I find wheels (Catherine and otherwise), but have yet to see a broken wagon wheel.

There are two South African coats of arms which have fracted wheels in their crests :
~ Herbert Vos (registered 1982)
~ Dr Willem Cruywagen (registered 1984) -- in addition, his arms include a demi-wheel.

I have seen an open St. Catherine's Wheel referenced as a charge to indicate martyrdom.

Arthur, are the demi-wheel and fracted wheel in the arms of Dr Cruywagen punning elements?

Cruywagen translates as wheelbarrow, so yes there is a punning element.

It is a symbol of St Catherine of Alexandria who was said to have broken the wheel on which she was to be killed. It is thus not strictly speaking an emblem of martyrdom rather a symbol of christian faith overcoming evil.

Yes, they're very much canting arms. There are historical Cruywagen arms which depict a serpent in chief and a demi-wheel in base and have a complete wheel for crest. Dr Cruywagen, who was administrator of the Transvaal province, established new arms by replacing the serpent with the eagle crest from the Transvaal arms, and changing the field from red and blue to green, which was the provincial colour.

I think most usage of it has symbolized a connection to St. Catherine, and thus is expected to be found in the arms of persons place etc. that claim her patronage.
