I thought I would share with you the work of Melanie Davies, calligrapher. Although I have yet to find an occasion to commission her, I am a great fan of her work and often take time to peruse her portfolio which is published on Flickr.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Martin. This, and the other illuminated addresses on Ms Davies' site have a rather late Victorian feel, which adds a touch of grandeur to them.

The standard of her work is so good that I could almost forgive (or overlook) the floating crest.

The crest actually looks like the little plume that some of the bucket shops put on their standardised templates. I wonder what the origin of these particular arms is.

Yes, pity about the floating crest because her work really is 'top class.' I see on her website she has done work for my local authority of Ribble Valley! So, in a very roundabout way, via my council tax, I can claim I am a patron of her beautiful work. LOL.
Regards .......... Peter

A very Victorian take on medieval illuminated manuscript work and probably considered these days by most calligraphers to be in street slang, 'Old Skool'. Beautifully executed however. Funnily enough talking of old school, last year I had to do a Letters Patent for the Crown Office for signing by the Queen, I actually gave it an 'in house' style of the House of Lords. that is to say reminiscent of Pugin. It passed muster and I was not sent to the Tower even though I took a few liberties with the royal crown! Unfortunately I am not at liberty to share any images.
