Unusual Descriptions

Postby Ryan Shuflin » 24 Apr 2022, 16:56

I recently read about the arms of Hockin in Devon, which are Per fesse wavy Gules and Azure, in chief a lion passant gardant Or beneath the feet a musket lying fesswise proper the base semy of fleurs-de-lis confusedly dispersed Or The arms were granted by Queen Anne to Thomas Hockin after he dispersed a group of Frenchmen. The story is here: http://www.telecall.co.uk/~78741/arms.htm, but it seems a bit suspect. The arms are recorded both in Parker´s Glossary and Burke´s General Armoury. Although Burke leaves out the "confusedly dispersed." Are there any other examples of an unusual descriptor applied to a charge or ordinary?

Hockin also belongs in the "fun with puns" thread, for the motto "Hoc in loco Deus rupes."
