College of Arms Newsletters 2017

Postby Arthur Radburn » 25 Jan 2017, 11:57

The January 2017 newsletter (no 49) is now out. Some interesting coats of arms on display.

This one caught my eye :

They were granted to Dame Dianne Thompson last year. According to Wikipedia, she was the CEO of the Camelot Group, which runs the UK National Lottery. I wonder if the lottery ticket stands influenced the design in any way.

The April newsletter has been published on the College website.

Among the arms featured are those granted to Julian Brandt of Charleston, South Carolina :

Nicely canting design for Brandt!

Even better if you speak Scandinavian languages. But the three F-de-L in chief strongly suggest French municipal arms, Lyon for example:

Unfortunately (to my mind) the College doesn't generally publish the intended significance of the charges in arms they grant - what you see is what you get! The fleurs de lys in chief do raise my curiosity, but also the coronet-like circle of gold fleurs de lys and white Maltese crosses in the crest.

I can only assume that both the crosses and the fleurs have some meaning to the grantee, either personal or familial; but what?? Maybe some personal or ancestral connection with France; or possibly some reference or allusion to a maternal line (grandma Lilly? Francine?); or maybe, combined with the crosses, some connection with one or another of the St John orders? Curious minds want to know! (Not that the College or the grantee owe me an explanation!)

Notwithstanding, a nicely simple canting design.

Julian Brandt probably/possibly is a member of the British Order of Saint John.

I have seen similar crests from the College of Arms where the Maltese cross is used to refer to the Order.

In the past the fleur de lys probably would not have been granted, nowadays it is fairly common.

Two grants to Americans (one Honourary, one apparently to a dual citizen or resident alien).
