Sir Ernest Shackleton

Postby Arthur Radburn » 10 Mar 2022, 14:28

An interesting news story is the discovery of the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship Endeavour in the Weddell Sea in the Southern Ocean. The ship sank in 1915, and the wreck is remarkably well preserved (some photos here.) These are Sir Ernest's inherited ancestral arms, with the insignia of the Royal Victorian Order and the Order of the British Empire which were conferred on him* :

He also had a banner of his arms, which he evidently took with him on at least one expedition* :

The team which located the wreck worked from the South African government research vessel SA Agulhas II, and there's some heraldry there too. The ship displays the South African national arms on the funnel, and on each side of the hull is the heraldic badge of the SA National Antarctic Expedition, displayed against a silhouette of Antarctica :
