An archaeological team has announced that remains discovered last year in Leicester are those of King Richard III.

The experts think that at least one of the blows to the head was caused by a heavy bladed weapon, but later refer exclusively to a halberd. But on the balance of probabilities it was a bill since that was the preferred weapon of English and Welsh infantry at that period. It was the English bill that triumphed over the Scottish pike at Flodden on 9 September 1513 (500 years ago this year).
