Symbols of Pride and Power

Postby Arthur Radburn » 14 Aug 2012, 14:24

A short series of articles on heraldry, written for the British youth magazine World of Wonder in the 1960s or '70s, can be found at http://bearalley.blogspot.com/ The first one and half of the four articles has been put up on the web page so far. Hopefully the remainder will follow shortly.

Unfortunately, writer and artist(s) are not identified. The heraldic illustrations look rather like the work of Dan Escott, who did so many wonderful paintings for magazines such as Look and Learn in those days.

I agree, these images do like the work of Dan Escott.
I have a lecture (talk) showing his work with Look and Learn and he is one of my favourite all time heraldic artists.

He's one of mine too. It was his articles in Look & Learn that first got me interested in heraldry.

I also love the work of the late Dan Escott. I knew Dan personally from our time together in the Sealed Knot. (A society re-enacting the English Civil War Battles and other events). At the time his 'day job' was painting the many shields to be displayed in Leeds Castle; he was particularly proud of his work there.

... painting the many shields to be displayed in Leeds Castle ...

I guess you mean that pesky Leeds Castle in Kent! Is my memory failing me (again) or were not the citizens of Leeds in Yorkshire somewhat surprised a few years ago to find that their tourist website was resplendent with pictures of a castle several hundred miles away?
