25 October - St Crispin's and St Crispinian's Day - sees the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt. This thread is for heraldic matters relating to that battle and its participants.

Where better to start than with a link to the College of Arms article on the manuscripts in its possession that relate to Agincourt:

In case anyone is confused, Montjoie is the one looking glum. I think I am right in saying that the feet belong to an English soldier hanged for robbing a church (and doubtless looking even glummer).

In the movie he didn't look to well before they hanged him

Curious - what are the three gizmos on the Bowyers arms?

The Worshipful Company of Bowyers has its own website of course, where we find that the "gizmos" are flotes, a specialised plane used by bowyers.

The City Livery Companies are all very proud of their CoAs and one can usually find something about each one on the appropriate Company's website. (Though not, I subsequently find, the Fletchers. I have sent them an e-mail.)

It is worthy of note that the City Livery Companies are entitled to supporters, which ranks them alongside both the great Corporations, cities and Grand Cross holders.

I have been in intermittent correspondence with the former Master of the Fletchers' Company and his successor about the truly awful emblazonment of its arms that the Worshipful Company uses on its web-site and elsewhere:

The Fletchers in fact have never been granted supporters and where these weird vases came from is a mystery. There would certainly be a case for a grant of supporters, many other City livery companies have them.

The arms themselves are not unpleasant, indeed they were used by Friar as the dust-cover illustration on his "New Dictionary of Heraldry" emblazoned by Anthony Wood.

Sadly the Fletchers' Company seems to be uninterested in either supplanting the present emblazonment with something more pleasing to the eye, or going the extra mile and obtaining a grant of supporters.
