"A crude forgery" -- Lord Lyon roars

Postby Arthur Radburn » 05 Dec 2019, 11:59

Lochaber2.png

Lord Lyon roars. Yesterday, he announced on Twitter that :

"The attention of the Lyon Office has been brought to this website https://lordlochaber.weebly.com/ this webpage https://en.everybodywiki.com/Lord_of_Lochaber … and this document https://lordlochaber.weebly.com/lettre-patente.html ….
The document is not a document issued by the Court of the Lord Lyon. It is a crude forgery.

"The document was not signed by Dr Joseph John Morrow, Lord Lyon King of Arms, nor was it sealed with the seal of the Court of the Lord Lyon."

The arms, he says, appear to be those granted to the Burgh of Fort William in 1930. He has sent a cease-and-desist notice to the address given in the document.

Given that the address is in France, I wonder what Lyon's prospects of success are.

Presumably LL could bring a case against "Lord Lochaber" for any number of things: fraud, forgery, personation, who knows, possibly even treason - for claiming to be a Peer of the Realm.

This document was discussed on the international heraldry society FB group. Among other glaring errors, there are blanks in several places (most obviously at the very end, where the year is given as "two thousand and"), and the text is obviously a computerized font, not hand lettered.

Nice to know that Lyon Office is paying attention!

I don't recall reading where this "Lord's is located if he's in Scotland, he'd be within Lyon's jurisdiction; but if (as seems likely) he's elsewhere it will be more compliicated...

"Lord Lochaber" seems prima facie to be in breach of the Scottish law of uttering forged writings, a crime defined as "using as genuine a fabricated writing falsely intended to pass as genuine the writing of another person".

Is there "another person" who is genuinely Lord Lochaber?

The Lord of Lochaber was a title in the peerage of Scotland.

Lochaber, historically consisted of the former parishes of Kilmallie and Kilmonivaig, prior to the reduction of these parishes, extending from the northern shore of Loch Leven to beyond Spean Bridge and Roy Bridge, known as Brae Lochaber.

These are the last Lords of Lochaber:
John II Comyn (1302)
John III Comyn (1302-1306)
Aonghus Óg Mac Domhnaill, Lord of Islay (died 1314× or 1318)
John Randolph, 3rd Earl of Moray (1346)
John of Islay, Lord of the Isles (1376–1386)
Alistair Carragh Macdonald (1386-1431)
George Gordon, 1st Duke of Gordon (1684-1716)
Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon (1716-1728)

The title was forfeited to the Crown and so there are no more Lords of Lochaber.

In order to even claim to be the "Laird" of Lochaber a person would have to own all of the lands known as Lochaber and in this day and age it would be impossible to purchase "all" of Lochaber as it has long since been split into lots of different owners. In any case, no one would call themselves Laird and Laird does not equal Lord.

Why all and not most of Lochaber or even just the Caput?
