Deeside Golf Club arms

Postby Arthur Radburn » 25 Apr 2020, 19:28

Deeside Golf Club.jpg

A rather unusual, off-centre, design : the arms of the Deeside Golf Club in Aberdeen, Scotland. The club adopted the arms and used them for years until the Lord Lyon caught up with them in the mid-1990s. "Fortunately," the club website tells us, "the design needed only slight amendment to qualify for official recognition in the public register of Scottish coats of arms."

The blazon is : Per fess Argent and Vert three piles issuing from the chief Gules in chief and a plate in base and a sinister flank to the base embowed Azure and fimbriated Or.

A very interesting design but not very Scottish! Any information about the symbolism?

One gets the feeling that the golf club may have resisted the Lord Lyon's suggestions and he went along with their ideas to get the income?

Anyway, thank you very much, Arthur, for posting the arms.

A pleasure, Iain. Certainly not a Scottish-looking design (if there is such a thing). The club website doesn't explain the symbolism, but I assume that it represents the golf club on the banks of the Dee.

Whatever. Lyon's motivation, extra income isn't it. He gets a civil service salary, and AFAIK the fees (other than the painting costs?) go to the government treasury.
