Many of you will know that I am a Director of The Armorial Register Ltd but you may not be aware that we have decided to petition for our own armorial bearings. You can read all about it in our latest newsletter:

I like the AR's arms, but I think that the lion in the crest should be holding up the globe, rather than "embracing" it as he is. Perhaps that just my preferences.

I especially like how he drew the lion's head

Well, it arrived today and it was well worth the wait.

It's certainly splendid. I see the artist has pierced the escutcheons and threaded the chains through them, as it were, rather than having the escutcheons resting on the chain, as in earlier renditions.

The shield solution is very clever when it comes to the size of the escutcheons; as to the "piercing" of the escutcheons by a chain, it's an artistic license and a welcomed precedence. I would not have dared do it myself. When you read the blazon, it looks quite a logical solution, actually.

Does anyone know of some earlier examples?

The directors of the Armorial Register are rather pleased with the linking effect and we too are kicking ourselves that we didn't think of it. It is an added bonus and gives the orle the look of a chain of office.

Well, the official blazon IS "within a orle of chains Or linking eight eschutcheons Argent" after all. :)
