A new petition for arms

Postby Martin Goldstraw » 29 Aug 2012, 11:07

The Armorial Register Ltd has just received a note from the Lord Lyon that he is content to consider a grant of armorial bearings to the company. The company is in the process of petitioning for the following arms:

Arms: Azure, an open book pages Argent cover and binding Or within an orle of eight escutcheons Argent interlinked by a chain Or.
Crest: A lion salient Or the forelegs holding down a globe Proper.
Motto: Fulfilment by Achievement

John showed me the first design and I must say that this is quite a departure from that. Did Lyon not like the first one, or was the idea abandoned before it got that far?

Lyon has not yet received any suggestions and is waiting to do so. We felt that the present (and hopefully final design) told a story, or perhaps I should say, allowed us to tell a story whereas the original design did not.

Any particular reason for the Office of the Lord Lyon being involved?

Geoff

Although the original was quite striking, I must admit that I prefer the latest design.

Hi Geoff, Lyon has to be involved as we are a Scottish Ltd Company and to use arms in Scotland as you know, arms have to be granted by his nibs.

I really like this design. The shield and the motto are spot on.

Another rendition of the proposed arms this time the shield has been created by John Gaylor and the blue has been changed to that of Pantone 300 the same as the Scottish Flag.

Our thoughts behind the design are:

Arms: The livery colours represent the home of the Company, Scotland, with each escutcheon representing an entry in the Register all linked together to form the Register itself which is published in book form as each volume is filled.
Crest: The lion is, arguably, the most recognisable of all the heraldic beasts and again reflects Scotland. Here, he is attempting to stretch his grasp around the world and reflects the registers international aspect.
Motto: Fulfilment by Achievement
The motto is worthy in its own right as a corporate motto but it also alludes to the fact that each volume of the register is added to achievement by achievement until it is ready (fulfilled) for publication as a book.

Very nice, and quite appropriate. I look forward to seeing the final achievement.

I like the new rendition (by John Gaylor), the argent escutcheons seemed too "blanked" to me in the first drawing (posted by Martin).

If I had one critique, it would be in regards to the crest. I dare say that the lion appears to be doing rather unmentionable things to the globe. Maybe the globe could be smaller and held between his forepaws to achieve the same symbolism?
