Fretty Counterchanged

Postby Mark Henderson » 16 Sep 2017, 16:07

Recently I have been playing around with different designs to test my skills. Any thoughts on the following example?

This is no where near perfect, but simply done in haste.

Mark: Could you post slightly smaller pictures? These are rather OTT.

My apologies! I resized the image. The previous images were quite large.

Interesting experiment!

To me the lower half works better than the upper half, because the black outline of the gold fretty pattern in base (good contrast) shows the weave better than the same black outline of the blue fretty pattern in chief (poor contrast - the chief could as easily be semee of gold lozenges unless you look closely enough to notice the black outlines)

You might consider outlining the blue fretty pieces in chief in the same gold as the field, and outline the gold fretty pieces in base in the same blue as the field, to emphasize the fretty weave and avoid the appearance of lozenges.

You could experiment with varying the thickness of the outlines to determine the best balance - not too thin to avoid the appearance of losenges, but not so thick as to lose the visual integrity of the fretted bendlets and bendlets sinister. Should be fun!

I like the concept and agree that it would be worth pursuing.
How do you feel about using shading to emphasise the under and over three dimensional effect?
Certainly a striking effect in your choice of colours.

I personally like a slight three dimensional effect.

Here was the other version. I was going for an aged look.

Nice artwork, but same concern re: fretty vs. lozenges.

Shading to indicate differing depth is another option. Not sure how well it would work in small scale or at a distance, but it would be interesting to find out!
