Here is a better view:
It appears to be some sort of mustela, a Siberian weasel possibly, but more likely a wolverine.

According to information from Heraldicum.ru - The Eagle symbolises Might and Vision, it is holding a Sable (Martes Zibellina) symbolising the natural richness of the Area. The supporters are two Yakutian Horses.

So not a Siberian weasel or a wolverine, but a sable.

I have to say that, given that the black coat of the sable gave rise to the heraldic tincture of the same name, for the Russian herald to give Yakutusk's CoA a sable gules is positively daft.

Thanx. As to the color of the sable I have to agree that guiles is taking artistic licence a bit far from "light brown", but then again, no one asked me!

Why would there be a problem with a sable Gules (other than the awkward blazoning in English) but no problem with a lion Azure or an eagle Vert?

Of course the issue arises (if it arises at all) only where black is called sable. In Russian heraldry it is probably called something else. Indeed a subsequent look at the Russian Wiki reveals that indeed in Russian sable is called чёрный (chyorniy), which translates as - black.

What an unusual way the eagle is holding the sable.
