Corbould arms

Postby Arthur Radburn » 04 Aug 2015, 10:36

An unusual design in a new grant which has just been put up on the College of Arms website :

According to York Herald's Twitter page, the "arms and crest allude to his successful stunt career including eleven James Bond films".

I like the 'concentric Gurges dancetty', but, feel the interlaced rolls of film a bit fussy!

However, I thought the spelling was 'gorges'?

To me it just looks like an explosion in a projection room.

Yes, I thought the design might have been inspired by a comic-book 'sound effect' graphic - all it needs is POW! or WHAM! in the centre of the starburst. Quite appropriate for a stunt man. I wonder if the two curved strips of film represent his initials CC.

Or are the heralds themselves merely frustrated art students stuck in the psychedelic seventies !

Perhaps Mr C has no heirs. If he has, they are saddled with arms that might have been created by Roy Lichtenstein.

Here's an interesting point: What would be the College of Arms' view were a future Corbould to seek a new grant of arms purely on the grounds of taste?

I would imagine that they would be delighted to receive a new commission. No one should be saddled with a coat of arms they don't like (there is always of course the option to deny that one is armigerous).

I think they might have an inkling that a Corbould was related to an armigerous Corbould. Greens on the other hand would not be so easy to figure out.

Interesting design! - though IMO it would be better without the loops of film, which IMO detract from the visual impact of the striking green & gold explosion.

Minor point - the wreath of three colors is unusual but nice; but the order of the three colors seems off. I would have expected Or, Vert and Argent, in that order - the principal metal, the principal color, and the next most prominent tincture; not Argent, Or snd Vert - the least prominent metal, the principal metal, and the principal color last. Both visually and in the blazon, the first and principal metal is Or - the entire field - not Argent, which is only the relatively minor strips of film.

Similarly, I would have expected the mantling to be Vert doubled Or rather than doubled Argent.

Not saying they are wrong - they are the KoA's after all - just unexpected.

(Oh horsefeathers - if anyone else had done it, we'd say it was wrong.)
