Heraldry of the Indonesian Air Force

Postby Marcus Karlsson » 07 Oct 2015, 18:30

From the Indonesian Wikipedia some Heraldry of the Indonesian Air Force. A sign that Heraldry is attracting the interest of Militaries Worldwide not just in countries with a Heraldic Tradition.

Air Force Operations Command I, the Insignia of the Air Force Operations Command II is similar, only the Roman Numeral is changed to a II.

Air Squadron 1, the Coat of Arms of Air Squadrons show the Squadron Numeral which perhaps could have been left out.

Sadly the Indonesians seem not to have inherited Dutch heraldic expertise.

Not the best heraldry from a European perspective, but considered functionally as badges they should work well in identifying and symbolizing these military units, composed of airmen who likely would find our style of heraldry largely unintelligible and meaningless.

I would say these insignia falls within a South East Asian Tradition as regarding Military Insignia. As for Dutch influence perhaps there was a deliberate move away from that following the Bitter Independence War. Some more Insignia:

Air Squadron 17, this is a Transport Squadron indicated by the Winged Carriage.
